How the dMAT Fits Into Your APS Application (Step-by-Step)

Last updated 2026-07-16

If your degree falls under one of the affected field groups, the dMAT adds one more step to your APS timeline — but the order you do things in matters. Here's how the pieces fit together.

1. Check your institution's anabin status first

Before registering for anything, confirm how your undergraduate institution is rated in Germany's official anabin database. Institutions rated H+ are recognized outright under German state provisions; an H+/- rating means additional criteria apply before a degree from that institution is recognized. This matters because the dMAT cannot fix a recognition problem — taking the test and getting a certificate has no bearing on whether your institution or degree is formally recognized for German admission purposes.

2. Confirm whether you're actually affected

Not every applicant needs to do this at all. Check the eligibility page and the affected fields list against your exact degree title, and confirm your intended intake is Summer Semester 2027 or later — Winter 2026/2027 applicants aren't affected.

3. You can start your APS document submission before your dMAT certificate is ready

APS India allows affected applicants to send their physical academic documents ahead of receiving a dMAT certificate, so document verification and plausibility checks can begin in parallel rather than waiting. See the APS certificate guide for what that document package looks like.

4. Register for and sit the dMAT within the fixed 2026 window

The dMAT isn't offered on demand. See registration, fees and dates for the exact 2026 cycle dates — registering as early as possible matters if you want a seat at a popular center.

5. Submit your dMAT certificate to APS India

Once your certificate is available in the g.a.s.t. participant portal, you submit it to APS India to complete your file. At this point, no additional or updated academic qualification documents can be submitted alongside it — so make sure your APS document package is otherwise complete before you get to this stage.

6. Your APS certificate is issued after cross-checking

APS India does not issue the final APS certificate until your dMAT certificate has been submitted and cross-referenced against your records. This final certificate is what accompanies your university application and, later, your visa file.

Plan backward from your intake deadline

Because the dMAT registration window, APS processing time, and German university application deadlines (often December or January for a Summer intake) all have to line up, it's worth planning backward from your target university's deadline rather than starting with the dMAT date. Missing the dMAT registration window pushes everything into the next cycle.
